The Benefits of Taking The Right Hair Supplement

Updated: Dec 11, 2020

The purpose of Prepare Your Hair is to provide you with a wide array of tools that you can utilize to address all causes of hair loss. The first step to any hair loss regimen should ABSOLUTELY be to build what I like to call a “foundation.” By this what I really mean is that in order for products such as minoxidil, laser helmets, etc. to be maximally effective, your “foundation” AKA your scalp needs to be as healthy as possible.

Our “Hair Foundation” formula includes specifically chosen ingredients that address every potential cause of hair loss so that all bases are covered. In this article, I wanted to go more in depth of the reasoning behind all of the ingredients we chose and what potential benefits they can have for hair.

Boosting Circulation

The first, and arguably most important effect that any good hair loss supplement should have is that it boosts circulation. Having good circulation is crucial to growing healthy hair for one reason and one reason only, good blood flow means more nutrients are being delivered to the hair follicles. When the hair follicles are receiving more nutrients this can increase the length of the anagen (growth) phase of the hair. When there are more hairs in the growth phase this subsequently means there are less hairs in the telogen (resting) phase. Beyond that, when more oxygen and nutrients are reaching the hair, it repairs damaged hair growing in the dermis layer of the skin which allows hair to hold on to the head better. Something you may not have considered is that the scalp is actually the farthest point above the heart, meaning it is the most prone to losing out on blood flow.

Here’s a quick test you can do: Massage your temples for 20-30 seconds, if you feel a tingling sensation that means more blood has just gone to those areas, which means you may be suffering from poor circulation to those areas.

When creating the formula, we wanted to make sure circulation was prioritized and ingredients that have been scientifically proven to boost circulation were included. Niacin, Ginkgo biloba, Nettle Leaf, Garlic, Gotu Kola, and Grape Seed Extract are all crucial ingredients for boosting circulation. The various benefits (for circulation) that come from taking them include: opening of blood vessels near scalp, strengthening blood vessels, increasing oxygen and nutrient capacity of blood vessels, and boosting overall circulation around the body. They have all been included in our formula in adequate amounts. Beyond just taking supplements for circulation, you should also be doing exercises that can boost circulation including: the inversion method, and derma rolling.

Suppressing DHT

Although 5-AR inhibitors (Finasteride & Dutasteride) are the best (and the only FDA approved) option for DHT suppression, it is still the most important aspect to reversing hair loss. The suppression of DHT can help reverse hair loss by (1) Stopping the weakening of strong terminal hairs, and (2) Turning weak/brittle vellus hair back into terminal hair.

Helpful Tip: As I talk about in my other article, DHT suppression should not be the main focus of any non FDA-approved hair loss supplement. Finasteride/ Dutasteride have been scientifically proven to block between 70-98.8% of DHT, making them far more effective than any supplement marketed to “cure hair loss,” and I recommend they be taken separate from our Hair Foundation supplement, or any supplement claiming to “reverse hair loss” for that matter.

Due to the fact that even though FDA approved DHT blockers are very good at what they are marketed to do, they are not perfect. This is why including at least one ingredient in a hair loss supplement that suppresses DHT is important to ensure maximum DHT blockage. In our formula those ingredients are Nettle Leaf and Zinc. Both of them have been proven in scientific studies to block the production of DHT. Links to studies below.

Controlling Dandruff/Itchy Scalp

Another very important effect that a hair loss supplement should have on hair that provides a strong foundation is dandruff control. Dandruff does not directly cause hair loss, but it often leads to itchiness on the scalp, which when itched can damage hair follicles.

The best way to combat dandruff is to (1) use good showering habits, and (2) use a hair loss shampoo. When utilized correctly the way you shower and the product you put directly on to your scalp will have the most dramatic effect in dandruff reduction, but that doesn’t mean supplements don’t have a part to play.

Some of the most common causes of dandruff include: aggravated scalp, irritated and oily skin, and products that cause contact dermatitis resulting in dandruff. The ingredients we have chosen to protect against these potential problems include: Garlic (helps calm aggravated scalp with anti-inflammatory properties), Grape Seed Extract (antibacterial properties that clear existing dandruff), Zinc (keeps oil glands around the follicles working properly), and Nettle Leaf(protects hair from damaging compounds.) Additionally, almost every ingredient in our formula works as an antioxidant which can control dandruff flares.

Additional Benefits

One of the main goals when deciding on the formula for our product was to cover all of the potential causes of hair loss. All of the causes of hair loss mentioned above are the most important to address because they are the most common and can have the most noticeable effects on hair. This does not mean that other causes should not be addressed.

There are a few causes of hair loss that other companies seemingly tend to overlook. Things such as stress, damage from free radicals, sleep, and melanin production are unfortunately often times put on the backburner, or not even addressed at all. This is certainly an edge that Prepare Your Hair has over competitors, among others, that makes our hair formula one of the most well rounded options for your hair loss regimen.

One very powerful ingredient that we have chosen to include is Ashwagandha root. Although research on ashwagandha is limited, there is strong anecdotal evidence that it has stress and anxiety relieving properties. As a byproduct of its anti-stress/anxiety properties it may be able to improve quality of sleep. Beyond that it stimulates the production of melanin in the scalp. This is VERY important and is too often overlooked. Ill break it down: when you are using treatments to try to reverse hair loss you will undoubtedly be dealing with vellus hair. Vellus hair is the short, colorless hairs that are where your healthy hair used to be before you started balding. These hairs are very weak but are still alive. What ALL hair loss treatments work to do is bring life back to those vellus hairs. Once you begin to see vellus hairs growing back, a common problem that people have is that they are colorless, and even though they may be long and getting healthy, it still looks like your bald because you can see right through them. Melanin is the chemical responsible for adding pigmentation to the hair which can substantially increase the appearance of coverage on the scalp. Ashwagandha is truly a must for any hair loss supplement. Beyond the benefits that ashwagandha has, Selenium and Grape Seed Extract protect hair against free radicals. Free radicals are atoms in the body that can cause damage to cells, protiens, and DNA, so it is crucial to protect against them.

Hopefully this article was able to provide readers with more insight into why we chose to include each ingredient in our formula and delves deeper into what benefits each has and how they effect the hair. Our hair formula will NOT cure hair loss but is a great foundational tool to use to start re-growing hair.

Just like a house needs a strong foundation, so does your hair.
